National rugby ambitions take precedent for Rowe

BRECKENRIDGE – Doug Rowe has his priorities straight.

The Breckenridge rugby player is juggling his responsibilities as president of the local Blue Goose Rugby Club and his desire to climb the national rugby ladder.

Rowe goes to California for a June 13 camp, where he will try to make the national A side – which is one step below the national team. From there, he will be looked at for a spot on the national team.

“I’m pretty pleased,” he said. “It will be the highest level I’ve played. It’s like a lifting platform. It gives you some higher experience. If I get on the A side and play well, then I could step up.”

The higher he goes, though, the less time he’ll spend with the local club.

“Depending on how I do, I’d be out of town a lot during the summer,” Rowe said. “I might only play two games for (the Blue Goose). It’s disappointing. but the national team is what I’m aiming for.”

Rowe is by far the best Blue Goose player. But his teammates understand his priorities and they try to get the most out of the time he can practice and play with them.

“Just having him around is really good,” said last year’s Blue Goose captain Alex Agre. “He’s at a higher standard than everybody else right now. It makes everybody better, so it’s a really good thing.”

Rowe will remain president of the club even as he travels to different national level camps and games. But he said most of the president’s work is already done for the season.

“Most of the stuff you can do we’ve done in the preseason,” he said. “So there won’t be so much to do during the actual season.

“I enjoy being the president, and I’ve got some good friends,” he added. “I like to help out wherever I can.”
