New HS spring, travel hockey team formed

March is almost here, but don’t panic, hockey is far from over in the mountains. A new high-school level hockey team, dubbed The Mountain Militia, will launch its inaugural season at the Steven C. West Arena in Breckenridge beginning in early March.

The new team will compete in the High Plains Hockey League, the largest high school league in the state. The team was founded by the Summit Youth Hockey organization, however, players from anywhere in the mountain region are welcome to try out.

“Our roster this season will be comprised of a strong base of Summit High School players, supplemented with recruits from Battle Mountain, Steamboat, Kremmling and possibly as far as Crested Butte,” said head coach and team organizer Bob Chesnutt.

The team will play eight home games at “The Steve” and eight road games in the Front Range area.
