Nike ACG Trail Running Series opens today with 5K/10K race

Daily Staff Writer

The Nike ACG Summit Trail Running Series kicks off the local summer competitive racing season this afternoon with a 5K/10K race on the Highlands/Flume trails on the north end of Breckenridge. The race, described by Breck recreation coordinator Diane McBride as “moderately difficult,” will start on the lower Flume trail off County Road 450. (Go east at the light next to 7-Eleven for about a quarter of a mile, and the trailhead is on your left.)”It’s a fast course,” said McBride of the series opener, which includes a challenging climb to start and then gradually evens off before finishing with a downhill section. The event marks the beginning of what has become a vastly revamped series. In addition to its now-two-year-old town of Breckenridge sponsorship, this year’s six races are being promoted with Nike ACG’s name attached, and will feature a nice cache of the sports giant’s prizes after each race, as well as at the series’ end. For competitors who compete regularly in the long courses (the fifth race, at 12 miles, marks the longest on the schedule), points will be kept and eventually used to determine the men’s and women’s series champions.Race-day registration (today) is $20 per race, and can be done at the trailhead. Preregistration is always available in advance of that week’s race, at both the Breck Rec Center and Great Adventure Sports, which also sponsors the series. – Devon O’Neil
