Olympic mountain biking bronze medalist Georgia Gould made an appearance as guest host at the annual Colorado High School Cycling League Cyclefest fundraiser on Saturday, May 10, in Golden. She and two student athletes entertained a crowd of 140 supporters while raising $25,000 to support programming and scholarships for student athletes, coaches and teams.

Established in 2009, the Colorado Cycling League, part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), is the governing body for Colorado high school mountain biking. The league currently runs a four-event season each fall.

Gould started the afternoon by leading several youth on a mountain bike ride at North Table Mountain between rain showers. The five-time national champion stated, “I was honored to be a guest at the Colorado League Cyclefest fundraiser. I know my fellow Coloradans are passionate about mountain biking and the outdoors, but I was blown away by the support and enthusiasm for the league. I was impressed and inspired by the stories of student athletes. It’s clear that high school mountain biking isn’t just a passing fad. It’s here to stay.”

Colorado league director Kate Rau said Gould exemplified the spirit of the league.

“Georgia is a gem,” she said. “She emulates the healthy, fun-loving spirit of our mission to create and sustain a positive environment where youth can flourish. We are grateful to all who believe in supporting the achievements of student athletes.”

During the fundraiser, Trevor VonBoeck — a varsity racer and founding team member of the Highlander Composite in Colorado Springs — expressed his love of the sport. He explained how he overcame challenges and described the strong bonds that develop among his fellow athletes.

“Not only do you get an opportunity to set goals and challenge yourself. You get to do so in an environment where this sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship is not only encouraged but actually thrives,” he said.

Fellow athlete Clare Baker told the audience how she gained confidence and blossomed as a competitor with the support of her team. She recovered from injuries and was an enthusiastic contributor to her Vail Valley team’s overall series championship title in 2013.

The 2014 high school mountain biking season kicks off this fall with the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede in Granby Sept. 7.
