PHOTOS: Arapahoe Basin Ski Area closes out Colorado ski and ride season

This colorful and flambouyant couple, Jim Kraemer and Carolyn Bigford of Breckenridge, celebrate closing day at Arapahoe Basin by going tropical. Sunday started out sunny and warm but by early afternoon dark clouds, snow and lightning filled the air causing both operating lifts to close temporarily while the day closed with nice bright-warm sunny weather again. A-Basin, or just the "Basin", as it's know to locals, was the first ski area in North America to open and the last to close in Colorado and is known worldwide for their extended season, great snow and extreme alpine terrain. Many thanks to the A-Basin staff for hosting yet another extraordinary and epic season!

The first to open and the last to close. More than 440 inches of snow, 241 days of skiing.

Who else but Summit County’s Arapahoe Basin Ski Area would hit those milestones in a single season?

On Sunday, a few thousand diehard skiers — many of them in festive costumes and summer clothes — descended on A-Basin for one last hurrah. The Colorado ski season is officially over.
