Potekhen 13th, Brownson crashes at Firestone Freedom 100
INDIANAPOLIS – Silverthorne’s Mike Potekhen advanced his position from 26th to 13th in the Firestone Freedom 100 Indy Lights race Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It earned him the FedEx Hard Charger Award. Potekhen was disappointed with his qualifying effort Friday because a fuel pump failed during the warmup lap, but he rallied from the back of the 27-car pack to pocket $13,500 for his Wagner Motorsports team. Jon Brownson, of Breckinridge, was the first car out of the 40-lap race run as a preliminary to today’s 92nd Indianapolis 500. Brownson crashed on the first lap and finished last. “I just got a bit ambitious trying to make a pass,” he said. “The guy in front of me, I tucked in behind his gearbox and I ducked in too close. It took a little downforce off my front wing and I was headed for the fence.” Rookie Dillon Battistini recorded his second career victory in Saturday’s Firestone Freedom 100 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Richard Antinucci finished second, 0.2458 of a second back, and becomes the new 2008 Firestone Indy Lights points leader, holding a 179-176 advantage over Battistini. Wade Cunningham was third, his third top three finish in four starts.
