Pryce is right – lineman to stay with Broncos

DENVER – Trevor Pryce and the Broncos have agreed to terms that will take the star defensive lineman off the trading block and keep him in Denver. The contract will clear about $3 million in salary cap room for the Broncos this season, the Denver Post reported. Before the deal, Pryce had a cap figure of more than $9 million, which made it virtually impossible for the Broncos to keep him.”This was never about us not wanting Trevor,” general manager Ted Sundquist told the Post. “We always wanted him, but it was all salary cap. I was so excited today when everything was figured out.”Pryce missed all but small portions of two games last season with a back injury. He had 60 sacks over the previous seven years, but with the contract the way it was and his health in limbo, Denver gave Pryce permission to seek a trade and made several moves to bolster the defensive line. The Broncos acquired former Browns lineman Courtney Brown in free agency and acquired Gerard Warren, Ebenezer Ekuban and Michael Myers in trades with Cleveland.Denver also lost last year’s leading sack producer, Reggie Hayward, to free agency, and is looking to running a 3-4 defense next season.Pryce said he was happy to stay in Denver, even after it looked almost certain he would be gone. He reported to the Broncos for offseason workouts Monday, a good sign that he knew where his future would be.”I think they changed their tune a little bit because there was some talk about me landing in Kansas City and some other places that they wouldn’t want me to land at,” Pryce said in an interview with the Rocky Mountain News.
