Ready to tee it up: Summit Countyl courses set to open

As Carl Spackler famously said, “I don’t think the heavy stuff’s coming down a for a while.” Well, Summit County golf courses are hoping Billy Murray’s immortal line from “Caddyshack” holds up through the summer season – or at least over the next few weeks, as Opening Day for a number of tracks are approaching quickly.

The Raven at Three Peaks will be the first to open. Those looking to get a peg in the ground can do so starting on Friday at the course in Silverthorne.

The Keystone River Course and Breckenridge Golf Club plan to open for the season a week later, on the 27th.

Keystone Ranch (June 3) and Copper Creek Golf Club (June 19) are slated for later dates.

The winter, which was so good for local ski areas, has made getting courses ready for the summer a challenge.

Although, the current opening dates are on par, or early, compared to most seasons.

“Our maintenance crew has been busier moving snow than moving grass,” Breck head professional Erroll Miller said. “With the extreme winter and spring, it has been a challenge to get the course ready.”

Both The Raven and Keystone River are 18-hole facilities and will have the full course playable when it opens.

Breck, which has 27 holes, is planning on opening 18 holes first – the “best 18 holes, meaning the driest and growing the most,” Miller said, adding the other nine will likely open the following week.
