Silverthorne crowns annual King and Queen of the Beach, Aug. 27-28

They came, they saw, they conquered: From Aug. 27-28, a group of 20 men and 11 women played in the annual King and Queen of the Beach Tournaments, hosted by the Silverthorne Recreation Center on the sand courts at Rainbow Park.

When all was said and done, tourney stalwart Eric Fischer took first overall for the men on Saturday. He weathered 14 games in near-perfect weather against a few of the best sand players in the Rocky Mountains, rising from pool play to the pro division knock-out round. Fellow local Bryan Rogers took a close second after the championship game.

On Sunday, Summit High School JV volleyball coach Aurora Santos went undefeated after 11 total games before the finals was canceled due to rain and lightning. Partner Natalie Burns helped Santos secure the crown in a very rainy, very tight final against second-place finisher Erika Solm and her partner, Kamila Taylor.

Kristin Walter shoots perfect to win Rimfire Challenge, Aug. 27

Take it from a range officer: Everyone at the Summit County Shooting Range will have to practice a little harder to dethrone Kristin Walter. On Aug. 27, the local real estate agent figuratively blew away the competition at the annual Rimfire Challenge .22 rifle contest with a score of 200.

Andrew O’Neel, secretery for the Summit Range Association, explains the rest:

“The first place score was 200 (all 20 shots within the 10-point bull’s-eye), with 16 of those 20 shots in the inner X of the bull’s-eye (about the size of a dime). The second and third place scores were 197 and 195, respectively. That is really tough to beat! Even the first place score in the youth category was 200, with 12 X’s. Incredible… we all need to pick up our game apparently!”

Adult winners, overall

1. Kristin Walters

2. James Wallach

3. Raj Patil

Youth winners, overall

2. Ben Scott
