A regular season varsity game against Glenwood Springs (3-10), hosted in Glenwood on Jan. 21. The Lady Tigers lost 38-34 in regular time to go 4-8 on the season and 0-6 in the 4A Western Slope.

Megan McDonnell had 16 points (leading scorer for team), 10 rebounds (led team), 4 assists (led team) and 8 steals (led team). Kassidy Pothier had 8 points off the bench (second leading scorer at 4/6 shooting), 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

SUMMIT VS. STEAMBOAT — TIGERS GIRL’S BASKETBALL

A regular season varsity match against Steamboat Springs (5-9), held at Summit High School on Jan. 22. The Lady Tigers won a rollicking match in overtime, 54-51. It was the team’s first win in the 4A Slope this season. The team was 5-8 overall and 1-6 in the league heading into the Jan. 26 game against Glenwood at home.

Megan McDonnell shone again playing Steamboat, with 20 points (leading scorer at 8/14 shooting and 4/6 free throws), 10 rebounds (led team), 2 assists and 5 steals (led team).

SUMMIT VS. STEAMBOAT — TIGERS BOY’S BASKETBALL

A regular season varsity match against Steamboat Springs (7-7), hosted at Summit High on Jan. 22. The Tigers lost by a single point when Summit committed a foul at the end of regulation. Steamboat sunk a free throw to win, 52-51. The Tigers were 1-12 overall and 1-6 in the 4A Slope before the Jan. 26 home game against Glenwood.

Senior Jack Anderson had 12 points and 10 rebounds (both season highs) and sophomore Dimitri Preciado had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

LADY TIGER INVITE — SUMMIT GIRL’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The final girl’s home meet of the high school swimming and diving season, hosted at the Summit High pool on Jan. 23. The meet drew six teams from across the Central Rockies and Western Slope for three team relays, nine individual events and one-meter diving.

Summit’s Maddy O’Malley took third in the 100 yard backstroke and was one-hundredth of a second away from the school record. The Lady Tigers’ next meet is the Glenwood Invite on Jan. 30.

BRECK BUCKS VS. ASPEN LEAFS — JAN. 22-23

The Breck Bucks and Aspen Leafs were in a fighting mood last weekend. The No. 3 Bucks faced the Leafs after a disappointing weekend series against the Colorado Thunderbirds (12-20), which saw them drop two points that they desperately needed to keep pace with the top teams in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League: No. 1 Aspen (27-5) and No. 2 Pikes Peak (25-5). The Leafs entered the game intent on avoiding yet another split series with the feisty Bucks.

The Friday game was a true showing of Leafs dominance. The Bucks were fortunate through the first period, as goaltender Oliver Elvenger kept them in the game. The Leafs had other plans in the second and almost immediately scored on the power play carried over from the first.

Posting 21 shots in the second period, Aspen showed why they are a force to be reckoned with and currently sit atop the standings in the RMJHL. The Bucks managed a breakaway goal to cut the lead to 3-1 halfway through the second, but the Leafs rebounded and scored just over a minute later on a rush. This pushed the score to 4-1 and the Bucks couldn’t rebound, eventually losing 2-9.

On Saturday night the Bucks came back determined to win at least one aspect of the game. Officials let two Leafs players enter the game, even though their eligibility was in question. Bucks coach Jesse Davis said his club will protest the decision, which he called “a ridiculous and gross oversight.”

The first period featured a lot of great back and forth action, as the teams entered the second period at a 1-1 tie. The Leafs soon took off and scored four goals in the second frame, showing dominance at times controlling the game. The Bucks managed a late-period goal to enter the third period still down, 2-5.

The third period would make an old-school hockey fan proud. The Bucks, despite being beaten on the scoreboard, continued to ratchet up the physical play. The Leafs added two more goals during the third to cement the lead before tensions hit a boiling point.

“The game was very physical, and although we didn’t play our game we didn’t get pushed around either,” head coach Jesse Davis said. With about four minutes to go in the game, Aspen’s leading scorer, Andrew Lee, got into a scrum with Bucks forward, Drake Cole, and both were sent to the box.

“They had both been at each other’s throats all night,” Bucks assistant coach Kory DeKoevend said. “It had been a battle verbally and physically that eventually boiled over.”

It didn’t end there. After Lee and Cole left the box with a minute left in the game, the two started chirping back and forth and dropped gloves for another fight. This time the benches cleared, and after it was all said and done, the refs handed out 156 minutes in penalties, with 132 of them coming in the last minute of the game. Lee threw his helmet at the Bucks bench, which was promptly tossed back, bloody visor and all.
