The Breckenridge Bucks (14-7) were in Aspen over the weekend to take on the Aspen Leafs (17-5), a squad that led the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League until recently being overtaken by the Pikes Peak Miners (18-2)

The Leafs were coming off back-to-back losses against the Miners and wanted to find their winning form again after having that impressive first stretch of the season. They jumped on the Bucks early in the game on Friday night, putting the Breck team on its heels.

However, the Bucks were able to weather the storm and left the first period tied at one behind a power play goal from forward Nick Neddo and fantastic goaltending from goalie Oliver Elvenger, who recently returned from a call-up stint in the United States Hockey League Tier I junior league.

In the second period the Bucks exploded as they put in four goals to Aspen’s two. The Leafs battled back in the third period and managed another goal to cut the Bucks lead to one, but that was all the boys needed as the Bucks escaped with a 5-4 win.

The loss put the Leafs on their longest losing streak of the season at three games. But, they were quickly able to turn the tables on the Bucks come Saturday night. After scoring only one goal in the first period, the Leafs went wild in the second period after the Bucks leading scorer, Milou Lofstrom, was called for a five-minute major for checking from behind. He was subsequently ejected from the game. After that, the Leafs didn’t let up at all and ended up pummeling the Bucks 7-1.

The Bucks return home this coming Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19 for the final few games of the first half of the regular season, going up against the last-place Glacier Yeti before the holiday break. The Bucks are 14-7-0 and sit six points back of Aspen Leafs in second place.
