BRECK BUCKS VS. ASPEN LEAFS
The Bucks headed into Aspen over the weekend, riding a wave of momentum they had gained from a recent string of wins at home and on the road. They put that momentum to use right away against a league-leading Aspen team that was down a few players due to team disciplinary suspensions and a few injuries.
The Bucks came out flying in the first period of the first game on Nov. 6, scoring three goals to look very much in control of the ice. The Bucks let the game slip away in the second period, as Aspen pieced their game together and controlled the remainder of the match. The Bucks managed to hold on, however, and squeaked out a 4-3 win against the top team in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League.
“We were not truly focused for the game,” head coach Jesse Davis said before the second game. “However, it seemed that both teams matched up very well in the first period.”
Davis also remarked that it was probably the best period of hockey he had seen in the league this year.
On Saturday, the Bucks and Leafs exited the first period 0-0, with even shots to the Leafs. In the second period, despite netting the first goal of the game, the Bucks quickly ran into penalty trouble due to sloppy play. Aspen then battled back, putting in two goals to take the lead into the final frame.
Two Bucks penalties from late in the second carried over into the third and Aspen capitalized, taking advantage of multiple five-on-three opportunities to wipe out the Bucks. The Leafs added an empty-net goal late in the third to put an exclamation mark on the win.
The split weekend ended the Bucks six-game win streak, but it also put them within four points of first place in the league. The Bucks are now in second behind the Leafs (10-2) and Pikes Peak Miners (10-2) tied in first. The Breck crew travels to Grand Junction next weekend to do battle with the Glacier Yetis.
