SUREFOOT COLORADO SKI CUP — DEC. 6-7

A two-day giant slalom event for athletes of all ages, hosted at Copper Mountain from Dec. 6-7 as part of the season-long Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup series.

The first Surefoot giant slalom races of the season brought athletes from seven countries, with local ski club racers taking advantage of the home hill. Day one of GS racing saw Team Summit Colorado’s Rachael DesRochers take the lead after run number one, with Sarah Schleper, a former U.S. Ski Team member now skiing for the Mexican national team in 14th. The second run of the day proved to be a different story as DesRochers lost her grip on the snow and fell off the course, while Schleper charged the hill to finish third for the day. McGrew and Watts finished 16th and 17th, respectively, after strong second runs.

Day two of the Surefoot GS had DesRochers and Schleper battling for the top spot. DesRochers was in the lead after the first run, with Schleper on her heels at 0.05 seconds. Desrochers and Schleper were both vying for gold when the former U.S. Ski Team member Schleper kicked out of the start for the second run intent on the win.

DesRochers stormed out of the start next as Schleper stood at the finish with her combined time of 2:04.19 at the top of the leader board. When DesRochers tripped the finish light with a time of 1:03.37, her combined time of 2:04.80 put her in second for the day behind Schleper.

“I’m really stoked to start off the season with a win,” Schleper said.

The Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup continues with slalom racing Dec. 20-22 at Steamboat.
