• One of many: Vail local Jill Piontek, 28, came to A-Basin with a group of Eagle County friends for Gaper Day at Arapahoe Basin. The teal onesie is just one of about four in her closet, but it was the only one that fit the '80s vibe she wanted with crimped hair, Wayfarers and, of course, the mandatory fanny pack. "I just felt like the blue today," she said.

• Like something from the Miami coast: A banana suit is only half of the Gaper Day outfit for Denver's Roy Hobbs. He found the '80s-era Head monoski on eBay a few years ago and started cobbling together the ultimate neon ride, including bindings he Frankensteined from a pair of thrift store skis. "Usually I'm rocking a pretty sweet onesie that matches the mono ski, but I loaned it to a buddy from Alaska and haven't gotten it back," he said. "I told him,'You can wear it as long as you wear it all the way through the airport and back to Alaska.' And he did."

• Custom onesie worth $140: Every onesie at the Basin on Gaper Day had a story, but Dean Spirito's custom Head suit takes the prize. The 29-year-old Keystone local found it in Taos, New Mexico about 5 years ago. The asking price: $140. Why? As he says, "Some rich oil tycoon brought it to a designer to have it customized with the fringe." He talked the seller down to $40, and since then, he's been offered upwards of $200 for the suit. He might part with it for $500, he said, but in all honest, "It's priceless, you know?"

• Wearing Bobby Brown on his sleeve:21-year-old William Haass of Denver has been wearing his dad's vintage track-suit onesie for years, and it's come in handy for more than Gaper Day. At an event shortly after Vail legend Shane McConky's death, Haass was wearing the suit and convinced Breck's Bobby Brown to sign the sleeve. "My dad has been rocking this for... well, not anymore because he finally grew up, but he's been rocking this for years," Haass said of the onesie. "I wish I had a hood. That's the one thing the '80s was missing, were hoods. I guess they were slow to catch on with that."

• Retro times two: Isabelle Thompson, 20, of Denver raided the Arc Thrift Store for the perfect Gaper Day pullover and found an old-school pink Tyrolia top — with a 1997 lift ticket still attached. By now it's an accesory, not to mention part of the costume, and Thompson has no plans of removing it before next April 1.

• Cheapest costume on the slopes: When Mack Voelker of Silverthorne needed a Gaper Day outfit, he knew the local thrift shops would be picked clean. He took his chances in Idaho Springs and came across retro gold: a multi-colored Obermeyer suit for $3, plus a $5 bill in the pocket. "I needed the Gaper Day special," he said. "There was no way I could pass it up. We were just driving through Idaho Springs and figured we'd find it cheap. We're still ski bums — we have to be money conscious."

• Boston to the Basin: Pat Lombardo of Boston made his first trip to Colorado for Gaper Day this season and didn't want to be one of the normal kids, and so he packed his paper-thin track suit top for a day of skiing. He also brought a whistle to complete the kind of creepy, kind of funny '70s gym teacher outfit.

• Even mom had style: Natalie Norris (left) and Traesa Kinney, both of Breckenridge, raided their parent's and friend's closests for Gaper Day goods. Norris, 25, found her mom's vintage Nevica jacket and Kinney wore a '90s Spyder top from her friend's dad. Will either one of them return the gear? "My mom never got rid of a lot of her old s*** and she loved it when I wore it," Norris said. "She says, 'See? This is why I hold onto old stuff.'"

• The fart bag: Onesie is so passe. Instead, Tahoe-area local Jenna Ramos, 27, is trying on the term fart bag. But it's not the only nickname she has for the purple patterned suit she found in Maine for $5 and brought to Arapahoe Basin. "We call this one, 'Asian Persuasion,'" Ramos said, the choed a sentiment just about everyone in a onesie shared: "I wish it had a hood, but beggars can't be choosers on Gaper Day."
