Playing a bit short handed due to injury, the Summit High white rugby team dropped their final regular season game, Saturday, to a tough Highlands Ranch squad.

Despite the 29-10 defeat, head coach Karl Barth was pleased with his team’s performance.

“They played very well,” he said. “… I thought they played the most constructive rugby of the two teams in the first half.”

At the break, the Tigers only trailed 10-5, as freshman Robyn Kresge notched a try.

Then when the second half started, Summit simply had trouble containing one Highlands Ranch player.

“They had one girl that scored four of their tries that our girls just couldn’t get,” Barth said. “Defensively, we just had a few breakdowns.”

Freshman Kelli Joyce scored the Tigers’ lone try of the second half.

With the loss, the white squad finished up the season one game under .500 and sixth in the eight-team league.

“They are still just looking better ever week,” Barth said, also noting the strong play of freshmen Katy Peoples and Hailey Anderson on Saturday. “The purpose (of the white team) wasn’t about winning. It was to help get these girls some experience and to build the future of this program.”

The White team won’t likely participate in the playoffs, Barth said, as a majority of the players will be needed to dress for the top-ranked green team. The green team begins playoffs this Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
