Rugby girls go All-American

Shauna Farnell

The accolades aren’t over for the Summit County Girls Rugby Club.

After taking fourth place in the National Championship a few weeks ago in Seattle, three players on the Summit team were named all-American.

Only 15 girls were selected for the honor this year, which is the highest for high school players.

Sally Gentling, who just graduated from Summit High School, was selected for the all-American team for the second straight year. She was selected for the No. 8 position, which is believed by coaches to be the most important spot on the field. SHS junior Aurora Ebert-Santos was selected all-American flanker. Junior Wendy DiMiranda, a native of Argentina, was selected for halfback even though it is her first year playing rugby.

“For Wendy, it’s huge,” said Summit head coach Karl Barth. “Especially being a first-year player. Nobody knew she was a first-year. She didn’t play like it this year. All the other scrum halfs at Nationals had played three or four years, and she beat them. She was going to go back to Argentina after next year, but now she’s not so sure.”

Throughout the season, all players on the Summit team agreed that the team effort and skill surpassed that of any individual on the team. Still, occupying 20 percent of the all-American slots is something nobody from Summit County is complaining about.

“It’s great because, last year, we graduated like seven all-Americans,” Barth said. “Sally was the only one left. Even if we didn’t have any this year, it wouldn’t have mattered because we play so well as a team. It’s hard to single anyone out. They played strong together all year.”
