BRECKENRIDGE ” Vail’s Sarah Schleper is making a quick recovery after last year’s back problems and having missed this season’s women’s World Cup premiere last month in Soelden, Austria. She landed her first podium finish of the season Monday at the FIS Rocky Mountain Trophy Series women’s slalom race at Breckenridge.

Schleper took third place with a time of 1 minute, 42.95 seconds, following first-place Maries Schild (1:41.59) of Austria and second-place Veronika Zuzulova (1:42.72) of Slovakia.

Race organizers at Breckenridge said the slalom course was much more difficult for racers the second run as tighter turns were required around more gates and racers’ times averaged about seven seconds slower than they averaged on their first runs.

France’s Christel Pascal took fourth place with a time of 1:43.10 and Croatia’s Nika Fleiss finished fifth in 1:43.48. Austria’s Kathrin Zettel won the award for top junior racer Monday after finishing sixth in 1:43.84.

Monday’s race at Breckenridge featured top international racers, many of whom will now travel to Aspen in anticipation of this weekend’s women’s slalom and giant slalom World Cup races.

A men’s world-class field descends on Breck today for more slalom FIS racing.
