Second SMC race to take place tonight in Breck

BRECKENRIDGE – The second of the 2002 Summit Mountain Challenge mountain bike races kicks off at 5:45 tonight at the Gold Run course.

The race begins on French Gulch Road in Breckenridge, with parking available off Wellington Road, following the “events parking” signs.

The Gold Run race is unique in that it loops around several old mining sites on Gibson Hill. Like all the Series races, it lives up to its namesake as a “challenge.”

“They’re all different,” said race organizer Jeff Westcott of Maverick Sports. “This one’s got a lot of climbing. It’s a wake-up call. But, with every climb, you’re rewarded with a fun descent, so it’s broken up.”

Racers will finish the course down the same part of Gold Run it starts on, taking a sharp left onto French Gulch Road. Organizers are asking racers to be courteous when passing, especially as many race categories will overlap.

“Some categories, like the beginner men, will have to pass kids,” Westcott said. “Courtesy is possible in mountain biking, and there’s plenty of room. So, when passing, announce your intentions. It would be a shame to run kids off the road.”

More than 300 racers turned out for the SMC opener at the Frisco Peninsula. Expert and pro men and pro vets will be the first category to start the race.
