Missing both of its seniors and a couple other key players, the Summit High girls’ basketball team struggled to a 36-22 loss against Greeley Central Saturday at the Rock Canyon Tournament at Rock Canyon High School.

Even with the missing players, SHS head coach Rachel Dunaway didn’t make any excuses.

“You have to play with the players that you have,” the coach said. “It’s unfortunate we didn’t have a full team, but that was still a team we should have beaten.”

Dunaway blamed a poor start and turnovers for the Tigers’ loss, not its roster.

Summit started slow in the game and dug a big hole. By the time the Tigers started playing better in the second half, the game had slipped away.

“If we came out in the first quarter the way we did in the fourth, we would have won that game,” Dunaway said. “Then we had 26 turnovers in the game, and that really hurt us. … We really need to work on our ball handling.”

Junior Chloe Webber scored half the Tigers’ points with 11.

Dunaway hopes to have at least three of her four missing players back for Tuesday’s home game against Eagle Valley. Senior Jeana Holman had missed the entire tournament due to illness, while fellow senior Julie Oberriter didn’t play Saturday due to a prior commitment.

“It is a huge difference not having our two seniors in the lineup, because Jeana and Julie are the leaders on the floor for us,” Dunaway said.

Summit (0-4) plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at SHS
