DENVER ” The Summit High School baseball team’s frustrating season got worse Tuesday afternoon as a pair of D’Evelyn pitchers no-hit the Tigers in an 11-0 Jaguars win that was called after five innings.

Summit’s depleted lineup “hit a lot of balls right at people,” SHS co-coach John Padjen said, though the coach stopped short of heaping praise on D’Evelyn’s starter: “He was just OK. He wasn’t one of the top three we’ve seen this season.”

The Tigers, who have now lost eight straight games, dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-5 in the 4A Jeffco League.

They haven’t had an easy road personnel-wise. Both senior co-captains, Billy Barto and Drew Arnesen, have not been on the field in recent games. Barto can’t play “because of grades,” Padjen said, and Arnesen is still serving a 30-day suspension for an undisclosed violation of team rules that took place at an early season tournament in Montrose. He will be eligible again next week.

Tuesday, Summit was missing three more starters due to a band/choral concert at the high school. The Tigers started three freshmen and a sophomore on the infield alone.

“Usually that’s not gonna get it done against a team like D’Evelyn,” Padjen said of the Jaguars, who improved to 13-3 (6-1 Jeffco).

Justin Green took the loss Tuesday, giving up 10 runs (four earned) in two innings of work. Sean Linfield finished up, yielding one unearned run in two innings.

Summit committed six errors.

The Tigers next play Elizabeth on Thursday, then travel to face Golden on Saturday.
