SHS ice hockey splits games at weekend tourney

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – The Summit High School ice hockey team rebounded from an embarrassing 8-1 loss to Battle Mountain on Friday night by beating Steamboat 3-2 on Saturday. All three of the goals against Steamboat were scored by senior Cam Carlson. The games were played as part of the inaugural King of the Mountain hockey tournament at Howelsen Ice Arena. Saturday’s win was especially fulfilling for the Tigers after they fought off 13 penalties that kept them shorthanded for almost the entire game. Both of Steamboat’s goals came on 5-on-3 power plays.”It was tough to get on track, but we hung in there and pulled off a W,” head coach Colin Smith said. Smith credited much of the victory on his starting goaltender, sophomore Seth Wickham. “I gave Seth the game puck,” he said. “He played on awesome game.” While Friday’s loss to Battle Mountain wasn’t quite the way Smith wanted his team to start the season, he said it was a valuable learning experience for the Tigers. “They got a taste of what it’s like to play one of the best teams in the state,” he said. “That’s only going to help us in our practices and from game to game until we play them again. We’ll play them again on Feb. 9, and I’m confident we’ll give them a much better game.”The Tigers’ season continues on Friday at 8 p.m. with a game against Colorado Academy at the Edge Sports Complex in Colorado Springs.Richard Chittick can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 236, or at rchittick@summitdaily.com.
