SHS Nordic opens season at Steamboat Saturday

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – The Summit High School Nordic ski team opened there season on Saturday with an interval start skate competition held at Steamboat’s Howelsen Hill. The Perkins sisters led the way for the Tigers, as junior Brittany finished third and Briana finished fourth. Leah Venturoni, Shannon Sonnett and Lauren Jefferson also cracked the top 20, finishing 11th, 15th and 18th, respectively. In the boys race, Patrick Neel was the top Summit finisher at seventh, with Kevin Soller, Isaac Phillips, Matt Bowers and Marshal Snead close behind at 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th, respectively. The biggest challenge facing the Tigers was colder than anticipated weather, said head coach Tom Sain. “We were kind of frantically rewaxing a few things,” he said. “It’s really quite humid there, so it’s a funny place to wax for. I’m not sure in all honesty that they had the fastest skis.” Despite the challenge the team’s coaches faced in preparing the skis, the team came through. “I thought they skied pretty well,” he said. The Tigers get the next two weeks off for the holidays, and return to competition on January 8 with a mass start skate at Middle Park.
