SHS tennis beats Demons

GOLDEN – Members of the Summit High School tennis team will head to Mexico, Las Vegas and other spring break locales with the memory of a dominant win over Golden fresh in their minds.

The Tigers handled the Demons 7-0 Wednesday, with only one match going to a third set. It was Summit’s first match since the March 18-19 blizzard, which forced postponements of three matches.

“The mood on the bus right now is pretty excited,” said Summit coach Rae Anderson as the team travelled back to Summit County. “It was just really fun to have everyone win.”

Summit’s No. 1 singles player, freshman Sutton Anderson, won 6-0, 6-2; No. 2 singles player Julie Wallace won 6-4, 6-3; and No. 3 Stephanie Swanson won 6-3, 6-2.

Summit’s No. 1 doubles team of Shannon Buhler and Lauren Cole was the only position to be stretched to a third set. Buhler and Cole won the first set 6-1 then lost the second 4-6. In the third set, which took the form of a 10-point tiebreaker because of impending darkness, Buhler and Cole won 10-4.

Lindsey Holden and Diana Smithwick took the No. 2 doubles match 6-0, 7-5; The “Em-n-Em” team of Emily Cardamon and Emily Baker won at No. 3 doubles 6-1, 6-1; and Sara Griffin and Brittany Ellsworth took the No. 4 doubles match 6-4, 6-3.

The Tigers improved to 2-1 overall and have now won their first two matches in their first season in the Class 4A Jeffco League.

They face Alameda April 15 upon returning from break.
