SILVERTHORNE – It’s time to get a grip, as a six-month bouldering series begins tonight at the Red Mountain Rock Gym.

The series will feature one competition each month and will alternate between the climbing gyms in Silverthorne and the Breckenridge Recreation Center.

The competitions will cost $15 each, with members of either gym getting a $5 discount. Registration begins at 5 p.m. with climbing commencing at 6 p.m.

According to Red Mountain owner Mike Wolfson, the series is part of the American Bouldering Series (ABS), a nationwide competitions featuring nearly 150 events in 30 states.

All competitors will need to pay a $10 ABS license fee at their first competition. The license will be good for the entire season.

The competitions will feature 10 problems for each competitor, with four different skill levels available from beginners to advanced to professional boulderers, Wolfson said.

According to Wolfson, the Dec. 19 date in Breckenridge doubles as part of the Tour de Front, a much larger Front Range series.

This competition will feature a slightly higher entry fee, but a much broader prize list, Wolfson said.

Future Red Mountain dates are Dec. 19 and Feb. 12.

The Breckenridge Recreation Center dates are Nov. 15, Jan. 10 and March 20.

The series is being sponsored by Starbucks, Dillon Dam Brewery, the Claimjumper and Essential Touch Massage Therapy.

All of the Red Mountain dates are also being sponsored by Wilderness Sports and Pizza 101, while the Breckenridge dates are finding additional sponsorship in Mountain Outfitters and Downstairs at Eric’s.
