Silverthorne gymnasts open season strong

The Silverthorne Storm Gymnastics Team had a strong showing in its first meet of the season last weekend against the Foothills Flairs.

Ten of the team’s 16 girls qualified for regionals in the Colorado Association of Recreational Athletes (CARA), and the squad returned to Summit County with eight first-place ribbons.

Sara Lindblom (floor), Kira Breitholtz (beam) and Chelsee Farrell (vault) each picked up first-place finishes at the optional level. Five of the eleven optional athletes picked up at least one regional qualifying score. The other members of the optional team – an advanced team, where the gymnasts make up their own routines – are Angie Elliot, Laura Reichardt, Kelly McDonald, Sarah Reichardt, Brieanna Barto, Chelsea Rybak and Emily Chant.

The compulsory level 4 team received a great opening performance by Jordan Smith. She won the vault, beam and the all-around. Other level 4 athletes – Abby Akers, Madeline Trippe, Sophie Elliot, Gabi Katzenbarger, Kathleen Moore, Meghan Kane and Brianna Rouillard – had mixed results.

Akers took first place on the bars and vault, and Moore was first on the bars. In all, five level 4 athletes qualified for regionals in the all-around.

The Silverthorne CARA team is coached by Ben Way and Kim Eickhoff. They travel to the Front Range again for their second meet June 14.

Most of the girls are focused on qualifying for regionals, and a few hope to move on to the state competition. The top six at the regional meet, which is July 18-19, move on to state.

“I predict some good stuff for our summer,” Way said.
