Silverthorne will be gymnastics central this weekend

SILVERTHORNE – The Silverthorne Recreation Center will be the hub for about 300 young gymnasts from throughout Colorado this weekend when it hosts a CARA gymnastics meet featuring competitors from 11 statewide teams.

Members of the Silverthorne Storm Gymnastics team and the Breckenridge team have been preparing for the meet for weeks.

There are only four meets throughout the summer leading up to the regional meet at the end of July. Several girls on the Storm team have already qualified to compete at regionals. This weekend’s meet will serve as an opportunity for the team’s 18 gymnasts to qualify for every possible regional event.

“What they have to do is meet the qualifying score one time throughout the summer,” said Ben Way, head coach for the Silverthorne Storm team. “Most of our girls have at least one. Our goal this week is to focus on the girls that don’t have all their qualifying numbers in.”

The Storm team consists of gymnasts between the ages of 7 and 18, some of whom have been with the program for many years. The team practices three times a week and is refining its skills in floor, beam, bar and vault.

“All the kids are very interested and are working hard,” Way said. “There’s been so much progress all around the board. The Level 5 girls have come a long way getting used to the bars. It’s hard on the hands and is a tough event. They’re pretty solid now.

“In all the events, they have most of the moves down, so the goal is to do what they’re doing and make it look effortless and graceful.”

Other teams competing this weekend will include Gunnison, Commerce City and several Denver teams. Competition begins Friday afternoon and continues through Saturday.

The Silverthorne Recreation Center starts its classes next week for beginner, intermediate and advanced gymnasts between the ages of 2 and 18. Classes meet once or twice a week for six weeks. The Breckenridge Recreation Center has already started its gymnastics classes but will conduct a beginners camp July 8-12 for 5- to 12-year-olds wanting to get involved in the sport. The cost is $83 per gymnast, or $75 for Breck residents. For more information, call (970) 547-4320.
