Ski Country win highlight’s softball opening day

BRECKENRIDGE – Tim Cron marked the occasion of opening evening for the Summit County Softball League Tuesday with a home run in his first at-bat. It served as a reminder that his Ski Country Antiques team is the class of the men’s league.Ski Country is the two-time defending champion of the most competitive league in the county -the Tuesday Men’s League -and this year, it comes in with the confidence and experience gained from winning the Softball Country C Competitive spring league in Denver.”We’ve really got a head start on a lot of guys,” Cron said. “It was a chance for us to gel and come together. So right out of the bat, we’ve got a pretty good advantage.”Their opponent Tuesday evening was The Goat, the only team to beat Ski Country last season. Things started auspiciously for the underdogs.Shevy Rashidi hit a double to lead off the game and scored quickly on Jeremy Thelen’s double. But that one run was all The Goat could muster until the fifth inning, when the score was already 10-1. The final was 13-3.Ski Country is hard enough to beat when a team is in midseason form. On Tuesday, The Goat didn’t even have it’s full roster.”It’s tough for us,” Rashidi said. “We don’t even have our whole team here. They’ve already played 18 games, and we’re just playing our first. We’ve got some cobwebs. We’re a little rusty.”The Goat hung tough through three innings, keeping their deficit to five runs. But Ski Country broke it open with four runs in the fourth.”They’re the team to beat,” Rashidi said. The Tuesday Men’s League is one of three men’s leagues this summer. There also is men’s divisions on Wednesday and Thursday. The coed days are Monday and Tuesday, and the women’s league is Wednesday. The Snake River Saloon, the Blue Tics, The Goat and Country Kitchen are the men’s teams that are nipping closest to Ski Country’s heels.”There’s always changes in personnel,” Cron said. “People try to get better.”The Blue Tics and Country Kitchen also started the season with wins Tuesday.Box:Summit County Softball LeagueTuesday LeagueMens ASki Country Antiques 13, The Goat 3Country Kitchen 14, Grand Timber Lodge 13Blue Ticks 18, Snake River Saloon 11Mens BYo Mamma 13, BBQ 3Jonny G’s 9, CC&S Construction 12CoedOld Dillon Inn Forty Somethings 16, Hardly Sober, 13Barley Pops 17, Target 7Marriot/Avalanche Sports “Mountain Lions” 22, Breck Socs 3Windy City Pizza 15, Old Chicago 4Hardly Sober 17, Agape Outpost/Imagicom 4Ullr’s 15, Resonators 11Goodballs 11, Carlson, Carlson, Dunkelman 10Jason Starr can be reached at (970) 668-3998 Ext. 231 or at jstarr@summitdaily.com.
