Snowboard Tour comes to Copper

COPPER MOUNTAIN – The one-of-a-kind Rocky Mountain Snowboard Tour comes to Copper Mountain Friday, as junior snowboarders will get a rare chance to compete with clubs from all over the state in a boardercross.

“It’s something we started for Colorado kids,” said organizer Ben Boyd, a coach at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. He, along with Team Summit’s Jim Smith and other coaches, formed the tour after noticing a gap between top-level events and beginner competitions.

Plus, the Colorado clubs were unable to compete against each other, because no Colorado-specific league had been formed.

Since the league’s start, the U.S. Snowboard Association (USSA) has jumped on board. A state development team will be chosen from the league and the USSA is hoping to draw from the Colorado talent pool for its own development program.

The races Friday begin at 10 a.m.

Registration is open at 8 a.m. at Jack’s. The competition will be divided into three age groups, 12 and under, 13-14 and 15 and over.
