Soap box derby hits Dillon

Summit Daily/Brad Odekirk The state's finest soap box derby racers will be back in Dillon on Saturday, trying to get to the big daddy of them all, the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.

DILLON – A gravity sport of a different sort will crowd Lake Dillon Drive Saturday when the 10th annual Dillon Colorado Soap Box Derby kicks off at 10 a.m.Weight-conscious competitors, ages 8-17, will drag one another downhill in their homemade racecars to see who gets to travel to Akron, Ohio for the 68th annual All American Soap Box Derby Championships in July. The Derby will include two divisions, stock and super stock. Both run in a double elimination format. The stock cars are smaller, accomodating a racer up to approximately 5 feet, 3 inches and 125 pounds. The car and driver combined can weigh up to 200 pounds.The super stock cars can fit a driver up to 6-feet tall and about 150 pounds. The car and driver combined can weigh up to 230 pounds. The 11-year-old stock defending champion and Breckenridge resident Brandon Gregory will try his luck in the super stock division Saturday, while super stock defending champion Missy Cahill, 15, will try to defend her title.

Cahill, a seasoned veteran out of Centennial, has already punched her ticket to Akron by qualifying in the super stock rally division earlier in the season. Racers will go through inspection and a preliminary weigh-in tonight. After the cars are cleared for the race, they will be impounded overnight at the Dillon Fire House. The racers will go through the official weigh-in Saturday at 7 a.m. Of the 26 competitors, 15 are from Summit County and the majority, 14, are girls.Race co-director Steve Corneillier said the winner doesn’t walk home empty handed.”The most prestigious prize that comes with winning is the satin champions jacket,” Corneillier said. “They also get a big trophy and money to get to Akron.”
