Some Vail skiers and snowboarders lack love for ‘Lindsey’s’
VAIL, Colorado – Vail Resorts’ announcement that it was changing the name of the International run at Vail Mountain to “Lindsey’s” is getting some heat as some locals think the new name also makes an unnecessary change to Vail’s history.
Kerry Donovan, a Vail native and now a Vail Town Council member, created a public group on Facebook.com called “I still ski International.”
Donovan didn’t want to comment Friday on why she created the public online group, which had more than 110 members as of Friday afternoon.
Nick Asoian, who grew up in the valley, said he was a forerunner at the 1999 World Cup Championships in Vail, so he knows the history of the run’s name first-hand.
“The name “International” brings that (history) to mind,” Asoian said.
The Facebook.com group isn’t bashing Lindsey Vonn or her accomplishments. The group’s official description says to “honor Lindsey without disregarding history.”
Asoian skied with Vonn at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, and said he thinks it would have been more appropriate to name a run after her somewhere at Golden Peak, where she often trained.
“It would have been cooler to have a training run called ‘Lindsey’s,'” Asoian said. “She trained there (at Golden Peak) and had a number of races on that hill.”
The Facebook.com group’s “recent news” suggests honoring Vail’s other Olympians, too, not just Vonn.
“Recently, Vail Resorts renamed Vail’s International ski run to Lindsey’s. While it is entirely appropriate to acknowledge Lindsey Vonn’s amazing achievements at the Olympics, this shouldn’t be accomplished by renaming one of Vail’s most famous runs with a historically significant name,” reads the post. “We cannot disregard history in the name of corporate spin. It would also be polite and honorable if (Vail Resorts) found a way to recognize our other Olympians, including, but not limited to, Sarah (Schleper), Toby (Dawson) and Chris (Del Bosco).”
