Spider Stephens softball tourney kicks off 30th edition

SUMMIT COUNTY – Forty-five men’s, women’s and coed softball teams from around Colorado converge on Summit County today as the 30th annual Spider Stephens Memorial Tournament begins.

Double-elimination play starts today at Blue River Park in Silverthorne and on the Frisco Peninsula field. The championship games are scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Silverthorne.

“Doing anything in this county 30 times in a row is pretty huge,” said tournament director Steve Wilkins of the Summit County Softball League.

Teams from Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Fort Collins and the Denver area will try to unseat two-time defending men’s champion the Rude Dawgs of Denver.

The local leagues are also well-represented with Snake River Saloon, Blue Valley Liquor, Quandary Grill, Country Kitchen, Yo Mama, Bula, Blue Tics and Ski Country Antiques in the men’s draw. The Moose Chicks are the only local women’s team, and Fatty’s and Country Kitchen will field coed teams.

The tournament’s namesake, Spider Stephens, was a leading force in the Summit County Softball League for many years before he passed away.
