Summit County’s Gogolen, Hauser strong as World Champs open

Local skier Tommy Gogolen isn’t so used to being on TV or featured on massive jumbotron screens.

“The last time I was on a jumbotron was at an MLS soccer game dancing it up at halftime,” he said via e-mail.

Well, he had a little different experience on Thursday in the Telemark Ski World Championships in Rukjan, Norway, where he was seen on a live broadcast throughout Europe, carving his way to a respectable 44th-place finish in giant slalom.

“All in all, I’m happy with my finish and I walked away from today realizing that I can hang with these guys if I can clean up my penalties,” he said.

Gogolen’s raw times would have put him inside the top-30 of the race, not bad considering it’s easily the biggest race of his young telemark career.

“It was an awesome feeling to be competing against the best guys in the world,” he said. “And … to get to see them compete and learn from them firsthand.”

One of those top-tier skiers is Silverthorne’s Drew Hauser. The 21-year-old hasn’t had as much time to train as many others due to being a full-time college student, but the 2009 World Junior Champion still finished 32nd Thursday.

The top American in the race was defending national champion Shane Anderson of Steamboat Springs.

The races continue today with classic, which Hauser will compete in. Gogolen will be in action next on Saturday..
