Summit girls’ hoops picks up second win of season

The Summit High girls’ basketball team went on an 18-1 run to finish the third quarter, leading to the Tigers’ finishing off their second win of the season 53-34 Monday against Jefferson at home.

And for a team that was constantly on the wrong end of those types of runs a year ago, it was a nice change of fortune for the Tigers.

“Yeah, it actually was,” head coach Rachel Dunaway said with a laugh. “There was a momentum shift going (for Jefferson), and we didn’t want to run up the score or anything, but we wanted to make sure we could get that win.”

Senior Taylor Greene scored 17 points, while the Tigers played without junior guard Jessica Malknecht. Junior Lauren Thomas and freshman Kayce Chaparas both scored eight points.

“Everyone played very well,” Dunaway said.

Her team did get senior Chloe Webber – out the last week with mononucleosis – back for the game.

The Tigers, who went winless a year ago, are 2-5 and if not for a couple heart-breaking losses over the weekend, could be near .500. Summit lost by four to host Woodland Park and by 10 to Palmer Ridge in the Mountain Madness Tournament.

“It seems like they’re coming along,” Dunaway said. “The press has been working well and our offense – I feel they are starting to understand it more.”

Summit plays at home Friday against Arrupe Jesuit. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m.
