Summit gymnasts get sportsmanship award

ARVADA – Although the Summit High School gymnastics team did not have any podium finishes at the League Meet Saturday at Arvada West, it received top marks for sportsmanship.

“The highlight of the meet was the announcing of league awards,” said Summit head gymnastics coach Beth Flaherty.

The Tigers took second place in sportsmanship – the category nominated by all 13 teams in the Jeffco League.

Also, team captain and senior Kendra Huenneke and senior Erin Young received All Conference honorable mention status for the league.

Throughout the meet, individual performances averaged seven to eight points, but the team took 10th overall with some wobbly beam performances.

“We started off strong with a great bar lineup, hitting all six of our routines,” Flaherty said. “Beam was a bit shaky with only two stuck routines from Katie Lindbloom and Kira Breitholtz. Vault was also strong. We finished on floor with our strongest routine coming from Claudia Bouvier.”

Bouvier scored 8.625 points with her floor routine but still couldn’t catch the top scorers. The team competes again Saturday in the Mountain League Open, which will be the final competition of the season before the state meet, Nov.1-2.
