Finally, everything started to click for the Summit High baseball team. The Tigers’ bats woke up, their pitching was solid and their defense was stingy.

All of it led to an impressive 10-7 win over Englewood High School, Tuesday.

“Everything worked,” SHS head coach Barre Lee said. “It was just great to finally see.”

Senior Jordan Sitkoski pitched four scoreless innings in early inning relief work, and fellow senior Scott Rappleye was 3-for-3 on the day with a sacrifice fly and a walk.

The Tigers ” in their first game coming off spring break ” started slow in the early innings, falling behind 4-1. But, when Sitkoski took over on the mound, the momentum started to shift.

“He kept us close by not giving up any runs, then our bats started hitting,” Lee said.

Summit put up three straight three-run innings, and took a 10-4 lead. Then Jason Looby, after inheriting a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, finished off the win by mowing down Englewood’s 2-3-4 hitters.

The Tigers finished the game with 12 hits, an incredible performance for an offense that has been inconsistent much of the season.

Senior David Leopold belted a double, a triple and two RBIs, while fellow seniors Erik Brooks and Peter Secor also had solid days at the plate combining for five RBIs. Looby also recorded two hits and scored two of the Tigers’ runs from the lead-off spot in the order.

Beyond the offensive explosion, Summit also played solidly in the field. The Tigers registered only one error on the day ” which Lee felt was a bad ruling ” and plugged the middle of the field throughout the day. Lee credited Brooks, his shortstop, Looby, the second baseman, and Rappleye in center for holding Englewood to seven runs.

“They really made every play that was near them,” Lee said.

Though only 4-12 on the season with a handful of games remaining, the Tigers have continued to make strides in Lee’s first season at the helm. Without an actual field to practice on this spring ” unless the SHS parking lot counts ” Summit has two more wins than it’s had in the past two seasons combined.

“The kids are starting to have fun, and things are moving in the right direction,” Lee said.

The Tigers play again today, when they travel to play Evergreen at 3:30 p.m.
