The struggles continued for the Summit Tigers hockey team Monday night as they fell to previously win-less Valor Christian 4-3, in an overtime heartbreaker at home.

Valor’s Vito Brown put the Eagles on the board first just 3 minutes, 17 seconds into the game. But the Tigers fought back with consecutive goals from Carter Flavell.

Back-and-forth scoring continued into the second period with the Tigers holding onto a 3-2 lead headed into the third.

“Every time they tied it up we took the lead,” Tigers head coach Bobby Dore said, commending his young team’s effort.

But with team captain Ryan Rodgers out due to illness and fellow defensemen Luke Egging out with a concussion, the Tigers were unable to hold the lead.

“Overall they played as well as they could,” Dore said of his team and the players he called on to fill in. “With my other two defensemen there, I think we win that game.”

The equalizer came from Caleb Vigil midway through the final period. Vigil closed the night with a hat trick — including the overtime game winner — accounting for all but one of the Eagles’ goals.

“A couple missed assignments led to the loss,” Dore said. “You gotta hit the net when you have a chance.”

Vigil scored the game-winning goal with his team shorthanded at 6:08 into the overtime period.

“They got the one break they needed,” Dore said.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 1-12 on the season. Their next game is away at 0-13 Mullen on Friday.
