The Summit High Nordic ski team began the season with a lot of questions surrounding its young team.

After skiing through the regular season, the Tigers seem to have found a lot of answers.

Summit had five skiers in the top-25 in what head coach Colleen LaVelle called a “huge” race at Eldora on Saturday and will send 12 of its 15 skiers to this week’s state meet.

“We did very well (Saturday),” LaVelle said. “It was a good

race for us.”

Freshman Tucker McCrerrey was the top-finishing Tiger, placing seventh on the boys’ side with a time of 12:48.

Duncan Koehn, a sophomore and the oldest racer on the boys’ team, came in 17th at 14:01. Freshmen Quniton Bobb and Troy Meeker finished in 28th and 33rd, respectively.

For the girls’ team, sophomore Julia Hayes led the way and finished in eighth place at 15:59. Bailey Jefferson (10th) joined Hayes in the top-ten on the girls’ side.

Next for Summit was Alison Rowley (22nd), Julie Bishop (26th), Heidi Gruber (28th) and Cali Greske (31st).

Katie Bilisoly, Robin Kreske, Rosa Foth and Sophie Ferguson also competed for the girls’ team.

“It was a tiring weekend,” LaVell said. “Now we can rest up and focus on state.”

LaVelle said that she’s been very pleased with the progress that her team has made this season, despite having many newcomers joining the ranks.

“We had six girls come out for the first time to race at this level,” the coach said, “and it’s really just incredible how well they’ve done. It’s been great.”

The Tigers have a quick turnaround before the state meet on Thursday, which is held in Leadville. Expectations are high, as both the boys’ and girls’ teams are looking to repeat as champions.

LaVelle feels that Hayes, McCrerrey, Jefferson and Koehn all have a chance of earning high finishes, not to mention both teams.

“I’m hoping that we place high,” LaVelle said, “but anything can happen.”

The overall, team winner is determined as a combination of both Nordic and Alpine ” which is held the same day at Ski Cooper.
