The Summit Tigers boys soccer team jumped to a 2-0 start to the season Thursday evening with a 2-1 win over annual playoff contender Valor Christian.

“It was a huge win for us,” Tigers head coach Tommy Gogolen said. “We haven’t beaten Valor in maybe six years. It’s a huge step in the right direction.”

With the win the Tigers squad might be approaching a top-10 4A ranking. Following last week’s 8-2 season-opening win over Conifer, the Tigers came on strong again Thursday, jumping to a 2-0 lead early in the second half off of two Alex Veleta goals.

“They looked good. They looked really good,” Gogolen said of his team’s effort, adding that there’s room for improvement moving forward.

With the 2-0 lead the Tigers eased up their attack, setting up a Valor goal with 20 minutes remaining.

“2-0 is one of the most dangerous leads you can have,” Gogolen said, because of the tendency to sit back and ease up on offense. The Tigers held strong and fended off Valor’s attempts to equalize.

The Tigers team will be challenged again next week when it hosts former 3A powerhouse the Classical Academy, Saturday, Sept. 6. — coming off a big win of their own against No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain.

The Titans moved up to 4A this year following a second-place finish at state last season.

“That’s going to be a huge test for us,” Gogolen said looking ahead to the Tigers’ next game.
