After games against Glenwood and Clear Creek were canceled due to weather concerns, the Summit High boys lacrosse team traveled for an away game at Grand Junction Saturday. While the team’s defense held strong through much of the middle of the game, the Tigers fell to Grand Junction 7-2.

“You can’t win if you can’t score,” head coach Karl Barth said. “We couldn’t put the ball in the net.”

Still, he commended his young team’s effort for most of the game on defense.

“Two thirds of the game was a shutout,” he told the Daily. “Our defense played really well. They gave up a couple early goals.”

Grand Junction also scored a few more goals late in the game.

“We’ve got a lot of potential. We’re a young team,” Barth said. “It’s going to take a little while to develop some consistency.”

The team hopes they’ll be able to figure it out and return to the playoffs again this year, but it will require some more offensive firepower. “It’s going to take scoring a little more than two goals,” he said.

With the loss the Tigers fell to 1-1 on the season.

The team has scheduled makeup games against Glenwood and Clear Creek April 9 and 21. They head into a challenging week this week, hosting Conifer Monday, then they’ll go on the road with games at Valor Christian Wednesday and against Telluride and Durango in Grand Junction Friday and Saturday.

“It’s going to be a really busy week,” Barth said. “We’ll have some tired campers.”
