In the Colorado State High School Wrestling Meet preliminaries, Summit High junior Nick Wittrock (29-9) beat junior Leon Sanchez (30-12) of Mesa Ridge by decision, 5-3.
The two danced around the mat for three periods Thursday night, with Wittrock earning five points to beat Sanchez by two.
“He outworked the kid. Those three points were points Nick game him,” head coach Pete Baker said. Last year, Wittrock lost his first and second rounds.
“I’m so happy. I mean, last year, making states, I didn’t get the win. This year, I feel so much more prepared. I’m at that level. I got the win, but I’ve got a couple more to go for the state title,” the grappler said.
Today, Wittrock enters the championship quarterfinals, where he’s up against Juan Lopez, a junior at Northridge High School with a 27-7 record. Lopez won by major decision over Mullen High School’s Donald Sisneros (25-10).
“I’m going to try to wrestle my match,” Wittrock said about how he’s preparing.
Should he win the match, Wittrock would advance to the semifinals, where he will likely take on defending state champion and senior AJ Rees (Discovery Canyon, 32-1), who pinned his opponent, Pueblo Centennial’s Darian Manzanares at 1 minute, 33 seconds into the match.
Today, Rees takes on Roosevelt’s Tylar Francis (25-9), who pinned his opponent 3:34 into the match.
Quarterfinals begin at 1 p.m. and semifinals are slated for 7:15 p.m.
