Summit Hockey drops tight opener

A top-notch performance from goalie Rick Odria wasn’t enough to put the Summit Tigers over the top in their season opener against the Liberty Lancers Monday night. The Lancers scored two goals in the final minutes of the third period to win 3-2.

After a scoreless first period, the Tigers got on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by senior Ryan Clift at 11:31 in the second period. Liberty tied the game at 1-1, but junior Andrew Ehrmann followed with a score for Summit, assisted by Hawk Wathan, to regain the lead with 3:40 left in the second period.

In the 3rd period, the Lancers tied the game once more with 2:50 left, and scored again 19 seconds later for the win.

Odria made 39 saves on 42 shots.

The Tigers hope to get on the winning track when they face Battle Mountain in their home opener Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.
