Summit Nordic skiers solid Saturday

Mass starts in Nordic skiing can get a bit hectic. Summit’s Jackson Hill was proof of that on Saturday in the Tigers’ race at Steamboat Springs. The speedy sophomore got tangled up with other skiers right out of the gate and broke a pole.

“Mass starts are always exciting, both to watch and ski,” SHS head coach Hannah Taylor said. “The Steamboat course is very hilly, and if you don’t have a great start position, it’s easy to get stuck behind a train of slow movers and then it’s a challenge to get around and move up.”

Hill still finished third in the race, on an all-around solid day for the Tigers.

Julia Hayes won the girls’ race, and the Summit girls finished fifth in the 5k skate competition. The boys’ team, despite Hill’s bad luck, was second.

“For the most part, (it) was a good day for the kids,” Taylor said.

Taylor was most excited about her team qualifying 12 skiers for the state meet (as long as each skis the minimum amount of races).

Aside from Hill, the boys had eight other skiers make the cut. Sam Piehl (seventh), Liam McDonnell (eighth), Quinton Bobb (14th), Troy Meeker (15th), Cameron Bobb (17th), Wade Rosko (19th), Emmett Bailey (27th) and Ian Parker (28th) all finished within the top-42, the cutoff for qualifying.

On the girls’ side, Cali Greksa (24th) and Sophie Ferguson (27th) joined Hayes in qualifying.

The Tigers are back in action next Saturday with another 5k skate race at Snow Mountain Ranch.
