Summit rugby tops Highlands Ranch 78-10

The shutout streak is officially over for the Summit High girls’ rugby team. With roughly 20 minutes remaining in the Tigers’ match Wednesday at Highlands Ranch, the home team broke a nice run for a try, stopping Summit’s amazing streak at nearly 835 minutes of play.

The good news, though, was the Tigers still had a dominating win over their league opponent.

Eight girls combined for 12 tries, as Summit rolled to a 78-10 win.

“It was a bummer (for the streak to end),” SHS head coach Karl Barth said, “but that was by far the best we’ve played, apart from the last 10 minutes or so.

“We came out and moved the ball so well and found open space. It was fun to watch. Everything we’d been talking about, they did.”

Rita Foth, Tayla Reller, Kelly Joyce and Alex Cooper all had two tries apiece in the match.

“Cooper played a great game,” Barth said. ” … Playing flyhalf, she not only scored but really set up most of what we were doing.”

Meg Weldon, Heidi Gruber and Chloe Dudick also scored for Summit, while junior Haley Anderson accounted for 23 points all on her own – one try and nine successful conversion kicks.

Barth also said senior Hannah Price had a big game for the Tigers.

“She didn’t score, but she came in and was a monster out there,” the coach said.

The Tigers, who hadn’t given up a point since the opening minutes of their opening match of the 2009 season, have a bit of time off before hitting the pitch again. Summit will host a match on Sept. 25.
