Summit should contend in new Jeffco league right away

The most tenured coach in the Class 4A Jeffco League thinks Summit High School’s adjustment to its new league will be seamless.

“I’m looking at Summit and Evergreen being the top two teams,” said Evergreen coach Liz Hudd, who’s going into her seventh season with the Cougars.

Conifer won the league last year with a 9-1 record. Evergreen was second at 8-2.

This year, with the influx of former Metro League teams Summit, Elizabeth and Englewood as well as Class 5A refugee Golden, the league bumps from six to 10 teams. Summit will play each once.

Hudd is familiar with Summit from her playing days at Evergreen, from recent scrimmages and from following the Tigers’ recent playoff runs.

“They’ve always had good programs,” she said.

Hudd sees Conifer falling off this season after losing an all-state setter to graduation and breaking in a new coach. For Ralston Valley, which placed third in the league with a 7-3 record last year, its two best players graduated.

Meanwhile, Summit’s two best players return this season (three of the six starters return in all), and Evergreen returns its entire starting lineup.

Last year, Conifer and Evergreen lost in the regional round of the playoffs, as did Summit.

The bottom of the league shouldn’t change, according to Rudd, with Jefferson (0-10 last year), D’Evelyn (3-7) and Alameda (3-7) bringing up the rear. Summit should have no problem with old foes Elizabeth and Englewood, both of which the Tigers beat twice last season.
