GOLDEN – Summit High School soccer can finish no worst than third in the Class 4A Jeffco League after Friday’s 1-0 win at Conifer.

The Tigers (6-1) used a huge goal from Jonathan Valenzuela with 23 minutes left to beat Lobos (4-3), who were one game behind Summit when the game began. The Tigers earned a state berth earlier in the week after beating Englewood.

Their final regular season game Tuesday against Golden will decide second place in the league. League-leading Evergreen (7-0) faces Ralston Valley and has the tiebreaker advantage.

Friday, it was Valenzuela who provided the heroics.

The speedster took the ball down the left side, cut into the middle and rifled a shot from 18 yards that found a corner of the net.

“It was really big,” Tigers head coach Peter Shafroth said. “Conifer beat us 6-1 earlier in the season.”

Clearly, this is a different Summit team. Goalie Kylor Dossett handled the Conifer threats, which were few and far between.

“He just made great decisions all night,” Shafroth said. “He made good saves and was coming out a little more. Conifer was pretty good with their through balls the first time we played. But (Friday), they just weren’t getting any chances.”

Tuesday’s game against Golden is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Tigers’ Stadium. It will also be senior night.
