Summit storms out of spring break

Jason Starr

The Summit High School baseball team took another step from the shadow of last year with an 18-4 victory over Platte Canyon in its first game after spring break.

Last year, the Tigers came into break on a three-game winning streak but lost to Middle Park their first game back and didn’t win another game. This year the Tigers burst back into action with four home runs and everyone getting at least one hit.

“We weren’t sure how we’d come out the first game after break,” Summit coach Mark McDonald said. “Last year we came out flat and the season sort of went into a tailspin. But the guys came out strong tonight.”

David Sustad not only pitched all five innings (mercy rule), giving up just three hits and striking out nine, he also went 3-for-4 at the plate. Ryan Clift hit a three-run homer, and Jason Scott hit a two-run shot. Justin McCleary also left the small Platte Canyon yard.

Summit scored seven runs in the first inning and never let the Huskies back in it.

“Everyone hit the ball hard,” McDonald said. “We jumped on them right away and made sure we stayed on top.”

David Payne and Anje Sramek went 2-for-3, and Ryan Norton was 2-for-4.

The win evened Summit’s record at 4-4. They are 2-0 in the Class 4A Metro League and play Elizabeth, which has won seven straight, today in a make up from an earlier contest.

Tuesday’s game started a stretch of six games in five days for the Tigers.
