Summit trio competes at NCAA’s

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS ” A trio of Summit County skiers took part in the NCAA ski championships last week at Steamboat. Josh Dayton and Andy Richmond competed in both Nordic events ” the 10K classic and 20K freestyle ” for Western State College in Gunnison, while Amy Beresford represented the University of New Mexico in both alpine events ” slalom and giant slalom.

Beresford led the trio results-wise with a pair of top-20 finishes, taking 19th in Wednesday’s GS and 13th in Friday’s slalom. She helped her school finish second overall, behind national champion Colorado.

Dayton’s week was highlighted by a 16th-place showing in Saturday’s freestyle race, one of the highest NCAA results in years for Western’s ski program, which lost its institutional funding and is now funded by alumni. The Breckenridge resident and Summit High School grad also placed 27th in the classic race Thursday.

Richmond finished 29th Thursday and 33rd on Saturday.
