Summit volleyball continues development with tourney

The Summit High School girls volleyball team went to Denver on Saturday to participate in the Bishop Machebeuf Tournament, where the girls split their matches 2-2 on their way to finishing third in their division. The team was 4-4 in games played. “Things are looking better and we’re getting closer to where we want to be,” said head coach Gary Sorensen. Sara Olbright led the Tigers on kills with 15 while Anicia Santos had 13 and Shea Dickey had 10. Dickey, Kendra Carlberg and Sara Griffin led the way in serving prowess with five aces apiece. The young team continues to find its identity with each game played and is progressing nicely, Sorensen said. “The team has enough positive things during a match that they are expecting to win, and it’s a pretty good place to be,” he said. The girls dropped their first two matches to Holy Family (26-24, 25-17) and Coloardo Academy (25-15, 25-16), but recovered to beat Hinkley (25-15, 27-25) and Goodland, Kan., (25-11, 25-14). The Tigers open conference play at Conifer on Friday, and return home for a homecoming matchup against Alameda on Sept. 22. Richard Chittick can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 236 or at
