The Summit High soccer team ended its season Tuesday with a 6-0 loss to No. 4 Niwot High School in the first round of the state playoffs.

“They were a really well-organized and strong team,” SHS head coach Matt Zeiset said. ” … Our guys played with a lot of heart and played hard, but it just didn’t go our way, I guess.”

Playing on Niwot’s home pitch, the Tigers hung with their opponent for nearly the entire first half. But three quick goals before halftime put Summit in a 3-0 hole.

Zeiset said his team refocused and came out stronger in the second half, but unfortunately, Niwot did as well. The home team scored about a minute in and then cruised to the win.

“I’m proud of our guys,” Zeiset said. “They had a great season, they fought hard. We were happy to make it this far. It was certainly a pleasure to coach them.”

The Tigers, who had 16 seniors on this fall’s roster, earned some critical wins down the stretch of the regular season to earn a spot in the state playoffs, including an upset over conference rival Golden on Oct. 19.

After Tuesday’s final loss, Summit wound up with a 7-8-1 overall record, 5-4-1 in the Jeffco League.
