Surging Silverthorne gymnasts will host weekend meet

SILVERTHORNE – The Silverthorne Recreation Center gymnastics team is hoping to clean up its form for this weekend’s home meet, which starts Friday at the rec center.

The team is coming off a successful meet last weekend in Littleton, where Meghan Kane, Brianna Rouillard and Libby Helmer qualified for regionals.

Kane was second on the bars and fourth in beam and all-around. Rouillard made regionals in the vault, and Helmer qualified for the beam and floor. Also, Laura Reichardt added floor to her list of regional events.

This weekend’s home meet will be a chance for competitors who are on the cusp of regional qualifying to get over the hump.

“We definitely want to show it off in front of our home crowd,” said Silverthorne coach Ben Way. “They’re a little more confident in their own gym, especially the younger ones.”

Maddy Trippe needs to improve by just a hair to secure a regionals berth on the compulsory level. Kelly McDonald, Emily Chant, Brie Anna Barto, Angie Elliot and Sarah Reichardt are close on the optional level.

Ten teams and more than 300 gymnasts will attend the meet, Way said. Competition begins at 2:45 p.m. Friday and continues at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

In other results from last weekend’s Littleton meet: Angie Elliot improved her all-around score by three points; Abby Akers placed first in bars, beam and all-around and was in the top three in every other event.

“In spite of all this success, we saw that we have a long way to go,” Way said. “We weren’t as clean as a group as we have been in the past, and we still have moves to be learned and form to clean up.”
